Transportation Restrictions

 

May not travel after 2pm on the day before the holidays and until 12:01 on the day after the holiday.

Travel is restricted on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Provincial Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Family Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Operating Time

Half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. If shipment is over 3.5m (11-6) in width you are only allowed to travel during daylight hours only with the exception of the Peace River Region.

Weekend Travel

No travel is allowed after 2pm on Friday until 12:01am on Monday for any load in excess of 3.8m (12-6) in width.

Superloads

Superloads in BC or “extraordinary loads” are defined as any shipments that is in excess of 85,000 kgs

(187,391lbs); 4.4m in width (14-4) ; 4.88 in overall height (16-01)

Depending on the route, may not be classified as a superload as BC has pre-approved designated routes.

Oversize Load Signs

A sign stating the nature of the load: “OVERSIZE LOAD”, “WIDE LOAD” or “LONG LOAD” must be mounted to the front and rear of the overall shipment.

Signs must be a minimum of 12’ in height and 6’ in width with a yellow background and black lettering with lettering thickness no less than 1 5/8” thick.

Flags/Lights

All trucks that are hauling oversize or overweight loads must have a strobing, flashing or rotating amber light mounted to the roof that is visible from 360 degrees at a minimum distance of 656’.

All 4 outermost corners of the overall shipment and any obtrusive points must have flags mounted to them that are safery red or orange in color no less than 16” X 16” and have the flags exchanged for lighting if moving during the night

In some cases a beacon light may be substituted.

– If granted night travel you will require 1 front escort if shipment is over 10-6

– Shipments that are over 11-6 wide up to 14-6 require 1 front escort

– Shipments over 11-6 wide are permitted to travel at night only

Additional Information

The width across the axle running gear may not exceed the width of the lowbed semitrailer (excluding jeep and rail lowbeds). Power units, pony trailers, and full trailers are not permitted to exceed legal width. Only lowbed semitrailers are permitted to an overall vehicle width of 10-5 for heavy haul operations.

In the even heavy haul equipment is used to transport reducible loads, the following rules apply:

Load being transported must not exceed the dimension limits set out in the Reducible Load Policy, regardless of the width of the trailer.
The lowbed semi-trailer wheelbase may not exceed

The Iron Creek Bridge located South of the Yukon border on Highway 97 has a deck width at the base of 14-0 and the bridge rail height is 19” high. As long as an oversize load exceeding 14-0 wide up to 14-4 wide rests higher than 1-6 above the pavement, then oversize permits can be issued.

Single trip permits may be issued for up to seven (7) days. There are some instances wehre a permit will need to exceed that limit and can be issued up to a maximum of 30 days.
